Wellsite Supervision & Operations Experience

Worldwide Experience

  • Over 45 Years of experience in the oil & gas exploration industry

  • Over 40 years of wellsite supervision experience

  • Over 170 Wells in 10 different countries for 30 different operators

  • Offshore: Beaufort Sea Canada, California & Gulf of Mexico USA, East Java Sea Indonesia, Bay of Bengal - Myanmar

  • Onshore: Algeria, Australia, Canada, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Syria, USA, Yemen

Directional & Horizontal Drilling

Alberta Canada Foothills:

  • Fifteen 4500-4800m wells in the structurally complex foothills belt of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin.  Directional drilling to the structural crest of a thrusted sheet of Mississippian Dolomite.

  • Geo-Steered 1500-2000m horizontal legs along the crest of the thrust sheet structure using samples, gas detection and LWD correlations, staying “Bed-Parallel” in a 5m target zone.

  • On-site interpretation of complex structural models and modification of the directional plan in response to faults and changes in the bedding dip, the strike and the plunge angle of the strike of the structure.

Australia Georgina Basin:  1000m+ horizontal legs from directional pilot holes

  • Geo-Steering within a 3m target zone using LWD parameters.

  • LWD-based computer program was predicting the structural profile and was being used to pick the landing point of the horizontal build section of the second well.  Cooper was also correlating the bedding and discovered that the computer program was erroneous by almost 3 mTVD; the drilling operation was halted, the Adelaide office consulted, the directional plan was modified for a successful casing point.

  • Company  was saved a very severe dogleg at the least and the cost of a plug-back at the worst.

  • Wellpath was kept within 1.5m TVD of the target zone and dogleg severity was kept to a minimum giving the company a very useable borehole for completion.

Wireline Supervision

  • Supervision and witnessing of over 125 Wireline Logging jobs including 14 pipe-conveyed logging jobs

  • Extensive RCI / MDT pressure programs to determine fluid gradients on over 25 wells under difficult borehole conditions and in thinly bedded strata

  • Single and Dual Packer Formation Pressure Testing experience

  • Detailed operational time recording to determine NPT (non-prodcutive time)

  • Trouble-shooting expertise in tight hole conditions

Geological Operations Work

First Calgary Petroleums: Algeria: The field geologist position in Algeria with First Calgary Petroleums was a "One-Man Wellsite & Operations Geologist" job and involved all aspects of Wellsite and Operations Geology, including responsibility for the format and design of the geological striplog, Daily Geological Report and End of Well Report format, arranging the export of SCAL core sections to Canada for special analysis and liaison with wireline logging and coring service companies.  When the company moved from one rig to a three rig operation, I was appointed the Acting Operations Geologist in Hassi Messaoud.  This involved interviewing and hiring an Algerian Operations Geologist, three Algerian wellsite geologists and conducting a Mud Logging Tender process. A Wellsite Geologist Field Manual was prepared and I was responsible for the training of the nationals in computer use, Geological Striplog preparation, reporting procedures, sample examination and petrology to FCP's Canadian standard.

Can-Oxy Petroleum: Yemen: Operations work in Yemen involved training Yemeni wellsite geologists in Striplog preparation, reporting procedures, drill cuttings collection, sample examination techniques and petrology.

Gulf Canada : Operations work with Gulf Canada involved taking well calls on a rotational basis, making operational decisions and travel to drill sites throughout North America (including offshore Beaufort Sea and offshore California) as the company representative to assist in the picking of casing and core points and supervision of wireline logging jobs.
